M. KONTOPOULOS Projects and Collaborations

I’m very excited to announce that I will be exhibiting Moon Theater, a collaboration with Nova Jiang and Andres Colubri at this year’s TEDactive conference. TEDactive– formerly called TED@PalmSprings– combines the usual TED talks with a variety of symposia, ancillary events and an exhibition, in which we’ll be showing. The exhibition space is called the “Innovation Lounge”.

TEDactive takes place at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs during the week of February 8, 2010.

I am very pleased to be participating in the excellent and intelligent programming of NC State’s 2010 Grad Symposium. The symposium is titled “Design, Community & The Rhetoric of Authenticity”. From their invitation:

We are currently engaged in investigating the notion of useful ambiguity in design practice. We are interested in a design process that requires both engineering and intuiting. We are intrigued by the utility of speculation. We believe that design inquiry that allows for provocation and improvisation can be academically rigorous and culturally relevant.
I’ll be showing Objects For Enhancing the Experience of Being Lost, a collaborative work with Nova Jiang.

I will be showing Machines That Almost Fall Over as a looping video projection at Storey Gallery in Lancaster, England. From their website:

This exhibition is about experimentation and play. It brings together artists with long-established international reputations, alongside recent graduates. What they have in common is a mischievous curiousity about the world around us, and a do-it-yourself approach. They conduct witty low-tech experiments to uncover the enchantment hidden within everyday utilitarian objects. They play around with cause and effect, finding out what will happen if they subject familiar objects to unexpected treatments. They are speculators, investigators, sorcerers, and jokers.

In this exhibit, I’m honored to be showing along side one of my favorite artists, Roman Signer!
