The two sculptures in this series are made using topographical information from Mars. Images taken of the Martian surface by international satellites were converted into 3D models and then fabricated using a process called CNC Milling, which “carves” the topography out of a block of solid material. From this point, plastic models were vacuum formed from the original models, at a prop-making facility in Burbank, CA. These plastic forms have been framed and lit with RGB lighting from the inside in order to play visually with light and shadow.
As a phenomenological experiment, I attempt to situate this work in the tradition of the Color Organ; Those early, pre-cinematic audio-visual experiments designed to encourage movement, contemplation and/or mediation. Ideally, one might hang this work on a wall and modulate the colors and lighting in order to imagine or anticipate viewing sunset or sunrise on another world.
